A little history about Littleton, NH...

Littleton was part of Lisbon until 1770, when it was granted it's own name, 'Apthorp', in honor of George Apthorp, head of one of the wealthiest mercantile establishments in Boston.

The land was later passed to Colonel Moses Little, an Apthorp family's associate from Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Colonel Little held the post of "Surveyor of the King's Woods", and the town was named 'Littleton' in his honor in 1784, the same year New Hampshire became a state.

Littleton was the first New Hampshire town to be awarded the NH Profile Community Award for preserving, protecting or promoting NH's spirit of independence. The town continues to have a reputation at a great place to live, work, and do business.

The town has more than twenty historic sites, including the Littleton Grist Mill, located on the banks of the Ammonoosuc River.

Today Littleton is vibrant and growing community.  While preserving it's Old New England Main Street character, you will also now find Home Depot, Applebees's, 99 Restaurant, and other high profile chains have recently opened shop in the community.

Littleton is home of the Littleton Stamp and Coin Company - one of the oldest catalog coin companies in the world as well as McClure's Maple - a well-known maple syrup and maple candy manufacturer.

Downtown Littleton features several restaurants, boutiques, gift shops and clothing stores and even has it's own first-run movie theatre, the Jax Movie Theatre.

Littleton, NH is located in the corner of the White Mountains region.  It's an energized community filled located in the White Mountains, on the New Hampshire / Vermont border.  It is the center for business, shopping, medical care, education and services in New Hampshire's North Country, as has been featured as one of America's Best Towns.

Geographically, Littleton is situated perfectly for those that visit the White Mountains for it's natural wonder or for it's major area attractions, as just about everything there is to do here is within an hour's drive.  Littleton is also a halfway point for those traveling from Boston to Montreal, and is only 2.5 hours from Portland, ME.  We are centrally located in connecting some of the greatest culture in the North East.

The White Mountains region offers everything from easy walks to strenuous hikes, Donald-Ross designed courses for golfing, cool mountain streams for swimming and lakeside beaches for relaxing in the sun, tax-free shopping, antiquing, theatre, arts & entertainment and more.  The natural beauty is astounding, and the fall foliage is beyond description.  And, with touring opportunities available via car, train, horseback, bicycles, trains, trams or gondolas, there is no reason to not absorb the magnificence of this region.
